Positioning for Strength: Lessons from Reinforced Concrete and Ministry

During the International Pastors Conference held at Balm of Gilead City, Benin City, a thought-provoking question was raised by Bishop Feb Idahosa concerning the role of biscuits in reinforced concrete construction, particularly in slab work. This simple construction concept opened the door to a profound spiritual lesson on positioning and strength, both in structure and in ministry.

In reinforced concrete construction, biscuits are small but critical components placed beneath or between steel reinforcements. Their primary function is to suspend the reinforcement bars at the correct height within the concrete slab. Without these biscuits, the reinforcement may sink, shift, or sit too close to the surface, leading to weak structural integrity, cracking, or even collapse over time.

The biscuits themselves do not carry the weight of the building. However, they ensure that the reinforcement is properly positioned so the slab can achieve maximum strength and durability. This illustrates a powerful truth: strength is not only about material, but about correct placement.

In ministry, this principle applies directly. Many ministers possess strong gifts, sound doctrine, and sincere passion, yet struggle to achieve lasting impact because they are out of position — spiritually, relationally, or structurally. Just as steel reinforcement must be correctly placed to function effectively, ministers must be properly positioned within God’s purpose, timing, and structure to fulfill their calling.

Positioning in ministry involves:

1. Being aligned with God’s vision and assignment

2. Serving in the right place, not just any place

3. Submitting to spiritual authority and divine order

4. Understanding seasons and timing

When a minister is wrongly positioned, even great gifts can underperform, just as reinforcement placed incorrectly weakens a slab. But when properly positioned, even small supports — mentors, discipline, humility, and obedience — can sustain great strength and longevity.

The lesson from Bishop Feb Idahosa’s question reminds us that visibility is not the same as value. Biscuits are hidden within the slab, yet they determine its strength. Likewise, many unseen disciplines and correct alignments in ministry are what truly sustain long-term effectiveness.

In conclusion, positioning is critical for maximum strength — whether in construction or in ministry. When God places us correctly, our gifts function as designed, our impact is multiplied, and the work entrusted to us stands strong for generations.
